What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?

What is erectile dysfunction (ED)? The penis is important in achieving and maintaining a strong sexual relationship. If it fails, it is sometimes called impotence. However, recurrent impotence can be a sign of health problems. For which treatment may be required. It can be a sign of emotional or relationship difficulties.

What causes ED?

Erectile is the result of increased blood flow. Direct contact of sexual thoughts in the brain with your penis usually stimulates blood flow to it. When a man is sexually excited.  So a muscle relaxes inside the blood vessels in the penis.  And this allows blood flow to increase through the penile arteries, filling the two chambers inside the penis. As the chambers fill with blood, the penis hardens.  The veins of the penis contract to help retain blood in the penis and maintain an erection.

How common is ED?

The prevalence of ED increases with age.  The University of Wisconsin estimates that mild or moderate ED affects 8% to 10% of men in each decade of life.  For example, 60% of men in their 60s may experience some form of ED. However, ED can also occur in teenagers.  A 2013 study found that 1 in 4 men who received their first treatment for ED were under the age of 40.  The researchers observed a stronger association between smoking, drug use and ED in these men than in older men.  This suggests that lifestyle choices are a major contributing factor to ED in young men. Although the risk of ED increases with age, ED is not inevitable.  In general, the healthier you are, the better your sex will be.
